From Ara Pacis to Nicaea: How Christianity Unraveled Pax Romana

Rome promised peace, prosperity and spectacle. But what if its greatest strength hid a fatal flaw? Travel from Augustus’s Ara Pacis to Constantine’s Council of Nicaea to uncover how a restless new faith challenged the empire’s very idea of civilization. Witness Augustus’s careful power play in the Res Gestae, the machinery of bread and circuses, and Palmyra’s desert boom. Step into the amphitheater with Perpetua and Felicitas, climb to St. Anthony’s desert cave, and feel the shock of 410 when Alaric sacks Rome. Then watch a pious bishop, Ambrose, humble Emperor Theodosius in Milan, and see Augustine answer Rome’s fall with a vision of the City of God. Along the way, a scrap of the Gospel of Thomas appears where you’d least expect it, hinting at deeper doubts the empire could never quiet. This episode follows the precise moments, places and people where Pax Romana met its spiritual rival. Watch to see how politics, trade, martyrdom and theology combined to rewrite the ancient world. #PaxRomana #AncientRome #Constantine #Augustine #CouncilOfNicaea #AraPacis #Palmyra #Documentary
