Description

The black hole in Interstellar is famous for being the most scientifically accurate ever put on screen — built from real equations, so precise the images ended up in actual physics papers. Almost nobody knows the whole thing traces back to a phone call. A favor. A novelist worried he'd gotten his science wrong. That novelist was Carl Sagan. In the 1980s, writing his only novel, Contact, he needed to send his heroine across 25 light-years of space — and he asked his friend, the physicist Kip Thorne, to check whether it was possible. It wasn't, not the way Sagan had written it. But the question sent Thorne down a path that founded the modern physics of wormholes, led to a landmark scientific paper, and decades later shaped the black hole millions of us watched in a movie theater. The same Kip Thorne went on to win the Nobel Prize. But the wormhole is just the beginning of the real science Sagan buried inside that novel — from how first contact would actually happen, to a haunting question about faith, evidence, and whether the universe itself hides a signature. This is the story of everything Carl Sagan smuggled into a work of fiction, and how one favor rippled all the way to a Nobel Prize. #CarlSagan #Interstellar #KipThorne #Wormhole #BlackHole #Contact #Physics #Space #Cosmos #ScienceFiction
