Description
📕 The Home Savings Manual — 79 ways to stop overpaying for your own house:
https://brendacarver.com/
Look at the middle of last week's grocery receipt. The chips, the frozen fries, the can of beans, the little jar of kraut, the carton of broth. Every one of those started life as something a farmhouse bought by the sack in October and didn't buy again until spring. Our grandmothers kept the same ten foods through every winter, cold and dark, and made them last till April. I still buy that way, with no root cellar, just a cold closet and a couple of totes.
In this one I'll walk you through the 10 foods every farmhouse kept for winter, and exactly how to keep them without a freezer:
🥬 Cabbage turned into kraut with nothing but salt, and winter squash cured so it lasts till spring
🍎 Apples wrapped and kept cold, carrots and beets in damp sand, and onions hung in old pantyhose
🫘 Dried beans by the bag, cornmeal and flour by the bucket, and lard rendered from fat the butcher almost gives away
🥚 Summer eggs kept for months in lime water, the way it was done before every carton had a date
…and number one, the cheapest food in the store and the one they've built a whole aisle out of making you forget.
The ten foods are the raw material. The middle aisles are the markup. Find your cold spot, and keep your money right where it belongs.
If saving money and a well-stocked pantry sound good to you, subscribe and stick around — that's what we do here every week. 💛
Where's the cold spot in your house, and what did your grandmother keep that I left off? Tell me down in the comments.
