Description
Something terrible is happening to Baby Boomers in America. But it's not quite what most people think.
For decades, Baby Boomers were promised a comfortable retirement. Work hard, save money, buy a home, and enjoy your golden years.
But in 2026, the oldest Baby Boomers are turning 80, and the reality of retirement looks very different from what millions of Americans expected.
Traditional pensions have become less common. The 401(k) system placed more responsibility on ordinary workers. Housing costs, healthcare expenses, and financial uncertainty have changed what it means to grow old in America.
And for some Baby Boomers, retirement has become something they simply cannot afford.
**So what actually happened to Baby Boomers? And did America's retirement gamble fail?**
In 2013, PBS FRONTLINE released *The Retirement Gamble*, investigating the risks facing Americans as traditional pensions gave way to 401(k) plans.
Now, 13 years later, Professor Blackwood revisits those warnings and explores what happened to American retirement by 2026.
The answer is more complicated than you might expect.
Some Baby Boomers have accumulated substantial retirement savings and home equity. Others depend heavily on Social Security, continue working after 65, or struggle with the rising cost of everyday life.
But money is only part of the story.
What happens when the family home becomes too difficult to maintain? When children move away? When retirement becomes lonely? Or when the freedom you've waited forty years to enjoy finally arrives, but life doesn't feel the way you imagined?
**IN THIS DOCUMENTARY:**
