Description
n 1946, America was entering a new era. World War II was over, millions of soldiers were returning home, families were growing, and a generation was being born that would change the country forever.
They became known as the Baby Boomers.
In Part 1 of this documentary series, Professor Blackwood takes you back to America between 1946 and 1960, exploring the childhood, families, neighborhoods, traditions, and everyday experiences that shaped the earliest Baby Boomers.
This was the America of growing suburbs, neighborhood friendships, family dinners, strict parents, Saturday morning cartoons, and children playing outside until the streetlights came on.
But behind the familiar memories was a country experiencing enormous change. The Cold War, the rise of television, traditional family expectations, economic growth, and the early Civil Rights Movement all helped shape the world these children inherited.
In this documentary, we explore:
America after World War II and the beginning of the Baby Boom
The birth of a generation between 1946 and 1964
What childhood was like in the late 1940s and 1950s
Family life, parenting, discipline, and schools
The rise of suburban neighborhoods and the American Dream
Television, popular culture, and everyday entertainment
The Cold War and the fears of growing up in the atomic age
The experiences that shaped Baby Boomer values and psychology
How America was changing as the 1960s approached
For those who lived through these years, this documentary is a journey back to a world that may feel both familiar and far away.
For younger generations, it's an opportunity to understand the childhood experiences that helped shape their parents and grandparents.
This is Part 1 of Baby Boomers: The Complete Story.
Part 2 continues the journey through 1960–1980, as the Baby Boomers come of age during some of the most dramatic years in American history.
