Description
In this video I show you how a Japanese kitchen can stay cool through a whole summer without using gas or electricity to run an air conditioner. I grew up watching my grandmother do it in a farmhouse in Tōno, and I still do it now in my own kitchen in Sendai. What I share here comes down to three plain moves. First, you block the sun before it ever touches the glass by hanging bamboo blinds outside the window or by growing a green curtain of climbing vines like goya bitter melon. Second, you pull a breeze through the room by opening windows on opposite sides and letting the air move instead of sealing everything shut. Third, you don't make heat you don't have to by timing your stove and oven use for the cool hours and by cooking cold dishes like sōmen noodles or chilled tofu. There is also a fourth layer that has nothing to do with actual temperature but works because of how the mind feels cooler with the right sounds, scents, and colors. I explain all of it plainly, and I also tell you honestly what these methods cannot do on a dangerous heatwave day. By the end you will know how to keep your kitchen livable on the hottest afternoons without running up your electric bill.
