Description

Did you know the Philippines has a palace with a hidden past? It was built in 1750 during the Spanish colonial period as a private summer house for a Spanish aristocrat. Then, in 1863, a powerful earthquake destroyed the Governor-General's official residence, forcing him to relocate to this summer house. This would later become Malacañang Palace. The name is believed to come from the Tagalog word mamalakáyahan, meaning "the place of the fishermen," because the area is located along the Pasig River. By the end of Spanish rule in 1898, the Americans took over Malacañang and continued using it as the country's main government residence. They also modernized and expanded the palace, replacing much of its original wooden structure with stronger materials. Although it was damaged during World War II, Malacañang Palace survived and remains the official residence of the President of the Philippines. #philippines #interesting #facts #interestingfacts #filipino #didyouknow #history #philippinehistory #government #malacañangpalace #malacañang
