Description

Japan’s Shinkansen trains faced a serious problem whenever they entered tunnels at high speeds. The train compressed air inside the tunnel, creating a powerful pressure wave that produced a loud boom as it exited. An engineer and birdwatcher realized that kingfishers could dive into water at high speeds while creating surprisingly little splash. Inspired by the bird’s long, pointed beak, engineers redesigned the front of the train to mimic its shape. The result was a more aerodynamic train that dramatically reduced the noise and improved performance, helping the Shinkansen reach speeds of more than 280 mph.
