Description

Russia is burning — but not every fire tells the same story. A major blaze erupted in the heart of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin’s hometown, engulfing the historic Miller Mansion near St. Isaac’s Cathedral. Around the same time, a powerful explosion and fire tore through the Krasnozavodsk Chemical Plant near Moscow — a facility linked to Russia’s defense industry and the production of explosives, ammunition components and other military-related materials. There is currently no evidence that Ukraine caused either of those incidents, and Russian authorities have not yet established the final causes. But elsewhere, Ukraine is striking back — and it is targeting something far more important to Russia’s war effort. Roughly 900 kilometers from the front line, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck major oil infrastructure in Russia’s Samara region, an area packed with strategically important refineries and petrochemical facilities. These sites produce aviation fuel, diesel, gasoline and industrial materials that help keep Russia’s military logistics system moving. This is where Ukraine’s strategy becomes much bigger than a single explosion. Instead of focusing only on the battlefield, Ukraine is increasingly targeting the industrial network behind Putin’s war machine: oil refineries, fuel production, logistics hubs, energy infrastructure and supply chains deep inside Russian territory. Russia’s enormous size was supposed to provide strategic depth. Critical infrastructure hundreds of kilometers from Ukraine was supposed to remain relatively safe. That assumption is becoming harder to maintain. The Novokuibyshevsk refinery in the Samara region produces aviation fuel, while the Syzran refinery supplies large quantities of diesel and other petroleum products. Those fuels matter because Russia’s tanks, trucks, armored vehicles and military aircraft all depend on a massive logistics system operating far behind the front. Ukraine does not need to destroy Russia’s entire military-industrial system. It only needs to keep hitting enough critical points to make sustaining the war more difficult, more expensive and increasingly unpredictable. Meanwhile, the fires in St. Petersburg and the Moscow region create a striking contrast. Russia has spent years launching missiles and drones at Ukrainian cities, energy infrastructure and historic sites. Now, even as the causes of these latest fires remain under investigation, instability and destruction are becoming increasingly visible inside Russia itself. In this video, Power Faultlines breaks down the St. Petersburg fire, the explosion near Moscow, Ukraine’s deep strikes into the Samara region, Russia’s vulnerable oil infrastructure, and the growing battle to cripple the logistics keeping Putin’s war machine alive.
