Description
In February 1852, Queen Isabella II of Spain was walking to church with her newborn daughter when a defrocked priest pulled a hidden dagger and tried to kill her. She survived only because the whalebone and gold embroidery of her dress deflected the blade. What she did next turned personal terror into one of Spain's most extraordinary jewelry stories: she gave the very necklace she was wearing to a small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary — and had it melted down into two diamond crowns that still exist today.
This is the story of Isabella II, the "Queen of Sad Mischance," her obsession with diamond star jewelry, her royal jeweler Mellerio, and a 450-year-old Spanish royal tradition that's still being honored by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia today.
