Description

When my first child was born I was given time off, and nobody told me how long it would be. There was no number. Nothing was written down. There was no form, and there was nobody to ask, because there is no person on this colony whose job it is to know that. I came off the rotation. And one morning, some weeks later, I was back on it, and nobody had discussed it with me at any point. This video is what grows in the space where the paperwork would have been. And at the end there is a number about my own people that I have read four times and still cannot account for. I am Eva Wurz. I am the head cook on a colony of a hundred and fifty people in southern Alberta, and I have done this three times. I also have a correction to make, at 0:55. I told you something at the end of the last video that I have not been able to find a source for, and I would rather say so than leave it standing. My husband Andreas has his own channel. He made a video about how we bury people, and there is a passage in it about very small children that I have never been able to answer from my side. I answer it at 9:57. SOURCES That a Hutterite mother "is allowed time off from her regular duties to attend to the needs of her newborn infant and to recover from the pregnancy" — with no length given anywhere; that her female relatives commonly come and care for both mother and infant; nursing that may continue to the second birthday with solids introduced between six and twelve months, against one month in the past; toilet training now at about two years, against three months in the past; and the family-size and growth figures below — "Hutterite Families," Encyclopedia.com, drawing on the standard demographic literature. The growth rate of 4.12 per cent a year between 1880 and 1950, described as the fastest natural growth rate recorded; the average family of slightly over ten children; and the confirmed drop of about a third in the birth rate since — same source. The Klanaschuel: that children begin "at the age of two or 2.5 years" and "graduate from the klanaschuel at age five"; that it is held in "a building specially built for that purpose, with a small dining room, a playroom and a room for taking naps"; the fence, the sandboxes; that "each colony has 3 or 4 Klanaschuel-ankelen who take turns leading the preschool" and that "most often it is older members"; and that what is taught is "responsible behaviour, prayers, songs, table manners and the like" so that children "first learn Gmanschoft" , Early Years. That from age five children "eat their meals separate from adults in the essenschuel, or children's dining room," and that at fifteen "a girl becomes a dien and a boy turns into a buah" and they leave it — Hutterites.org, From Child to Adult. A NOTE ON HONESTY At the end of the last video I said a woman here takes six weeks. I have looked for where that figure came from and I cannot find it in anything I can point you to. What is written says only that she is given time off. No length. I have corrected it at 0:55 and I am correcting it here. The age at which a child starts the Klanaschuel is given as two or two and a half in our own materials and as three elsewhere. I have said two or two and a half because that is what our own people publish, but you should know the sources differ. I do not name the inherited conditions I refer to at 9:57. I am not a doctor, and I am not willing to have families on other colonies recognised in a video. Next: what happens to a woman here when she turns forty-five.
