In this video, we break down how Better Call Saul uses color to tell its story, a hidden visual code that maps Jimmy McGill’s tragic downfall years before he ever handed out a Saul Goodman card. Unlike Breaking Bad, which shifted colors to show Walt’s evolution, this show uses color as a psychological cage, locking every character into their lane on the wheel.
We decode the whole system. The cold blues and navies of the legal world, worn by Chuck, Howard, and a rule-following Kim Wexler, and even by Mike, the honest thief clinging to his own code. The hot reds and oranges of the criminal underworld, and poor Nacho Varga, drowning in a red that turns from power to a laser sight on his back. The murky middle ground of brown and yellow, Jimmy’s split identity, his canary Suzuki with one red door that secretly spells out the Saul Goodman title card. The wolf in sheep’s clothing, from Jimmy’s red ties to Kim’s “bad girl blouses” to Mike’s shattering red vest. And the Bagman tragedy, where pink turns to blood red and the two worlds crash together for good.
Jimmy was always going to end up soaked in Saul Goodman’s colors. What’s your favorite hidden color detail? Tell us in the comments.
