Description
In 1761, a French ship called L’Utile crashed into the coral reefs of a tiny, remote island in the Indian Ocean. Among those who survived were Malagasy people who had been taken from Madagascar and were being transported into slavery.
But the shipwreck was only the beginning of their nightmare.
After the French crew escaped, the Malagasy survivors were left behind with a promise that another ship would return to rescue them. That promise went unfulfilled for 15 years.
On a tiny island surrounded by the vast ocean, they faced hunger, a shortage of fresh water, harsh weather, and the constant struggle to stay alive. With limited resources, they found ways to build shelters, prepare food, and survive in one of the most isolated places imaginable.
Then, in 1776, a rescue ship finally arrived. Only seven women and an eight-month-old child remained alive.
This is the true story of Tromelin Island — a forgotten chapter of history about slavery, abandonment, human resilience, and the people who refused to give up.
Watch this Hindi historical survival documentary to discover what happened to the survivors of the 1761 shipwreck and how archaeology helped uncover their extraordinary story.
