Description
438 days. One small fishing boat. No engine. No land in sight.
In November 2012, fisherman José Salvador Alvarenga left the coast of Mexico on a fishing trip. What was supposed to be a short journey turned into an extraordinary survival ordeal when a powerful storm pushed his boat far into the Pacific Ocean.a
After losing his ability to return normally to shore, Alvarenga was left drifting across the Pacific with limited supplies. He had to depend on the ocean for food and rain for drinking water while trying to keep his small boat afloat.
His companion, Ezequiel Córdoba, died several months into the journey, leaving Alvarenga alone in the middle of the Pacific.
For more than a year, he survived by catching fish and other marine life and collecting rainwater. He also searched the horizon for passing ships while his boat continued drifting thousands of miles from Mexico.
After 438 days at sea, Alvarenga eventually reached Ebon Atoll in the Marshall Islands in January 2014. He was found severely weakened but alive, bringing one of the most extraordinary documented ocean survival stories to an end.
