Description
In August 1974, thousands of residents fled Varosha, Cyprus, as war approached their homes. Many believed they would return within days.
Instead, their once-thriving Mediterranean resort town was sealed behind military fences for decades.
Before the war, Varosha was famous for its beautiful beaches, luxury hotels, and international visitors. After 1974, its buildings deteriorated while displaced families waited for the chance to return.
Then, in 2020, parts of Varosha reopened—but for visitors, not for the families to simply reclaim their homes.
What happened to Varosha? Why was it abandoned? And why does its future remain unresolved more than fifty years later?
Join Professor Bones on Strange Detour as we explore the history of Varosha, the division of Cyprus, and the people who lost their homes.
Subscribe for strange history, forgotten disasters, abandoned places, and extraordinary true stories.
