Description
In 562, Tikal lost its king — and disappeared from history for 130 years. This is Maya's greatest revenge story.
A stone monument at Tikal records King Wak Chan K'awiil being captured and killed in 562. No full battle account survives — we don't know where they fought or exactly how he died. But that defeat flipped the ancient Maya world.
Calakmul, in what is now southern Mexico, rose while Tikal, in present-day Guatemala, went quiet. Scholars call it Tikal's decline — inscriptions vanish for decades while Calakmul builds alliances through marriage, diplomacy, and war.
Then in 695, Tikal's ruler Jasaw Chan K'awiil defeated Calakmul and carved the victory into stone.
True stories so strange it's unbelievable. New short stories daily with more in-depth ones weekly.
