Description
If a box of plant food goes in your cart every fall and again every April, start here: https://thesmallgardenbook.com
The Small Garden traces every job on an American lot to the decision that created it, with the Job Ledger and the Yard & Jobs Audit to run on your own yard.
379 pages, 88 chapters, every claim sourced. $47 early-bird, 30-day refund.
I grew up in a Japanese house. I've now lived in America longer than I lived in Japan.
People assume a vegetable bed that has never seen a bag of fertilizer runs on thrift, or on some old wisdom about soil. It doesn't. The box is built for every yard in the country at once, and plenty of yards already hold more of what's in it than their plants will ever use.
My mother has grown vegetables her whole life and never bought one. This video walks through seven moves: what the three numbers on the box mean, the soil test that tells you what your ground is actually short of, and the free things she uses instead, from rice bran to wood ash. The last one is a question she asked me when I was ten, and it explains all seven.
America wins one of these outright. Every state has a university soil lab that will tell you what your ground needs for less than the box costs, and a pot on your deck, with no soil life in it, genuinely needs the bag. Fall feeding works where the ground gets cold over winter; on the Gulf Coast, warm wet winters wash it out before spring, and wood ash stays out of the already-alkaline soils of the dry West.
If you make it to the end, leave one word in the comments: done. And tell me the three numbers on the fertilizer you bought this year, and what zone you're in. If a soil test ever surprised you, tell me that too.
For inside the house, the rooms, the habits, the systems, that's my main channel, Two Houses: @kentsukamoto
