Description
If there's a persimmon on your street going into a trash bag every November: https://thesmallgardenbook.com
The Small Garden gives that tree two chapters: the persimmon held at picking height for fifty years, and the plain math on what one food tree pays a household.
379 pages, 88 chapters, every claim sourced. $47 early-bird, 30-day refund.
I grew up in a Japanese house. I've now lived in America longer than I lived in Japan.
Everyone assumes dried persimmon takes some kind of Japanese patience. It takes a string, a roof, and a few minutes every few days. In the old days nearly every country house in Japan already had the tree in the yard and someone standing under it to show the kids how.
Six reasons the fruit gets shoveled here instead of hung, each with its fix: the bite, the truck, the string, the massage, the weather, and the tree itself. And at the end, the one persimmon my mother leaves on her tree every single year.
I'll give America two points. In a wet fall, the dehydrator on your counter beats my mother's eaves, and America's own native persimmon grows far colder than hers, into zone 4 or 5. California's dry interior can hang them outside exactly as shown; most of the country east of the Plains should hang them indoors by a sunny window with a fan, or use the dehydrator.
If you make it to the end, leave one word in the comments: your zone. And if someone in your family dried or put up a fruit, tell me which one, and who it was.
For inside the house (the rooms, the habits, the systems), that's my main channel, Two Houses: @kentsukamoto
