A secret Russian hit squad built for surveillance, sabotage, and assassinations was supposed to operate without leaving a trace, but one surprisingly ordinary piece of technology helped expose the entire operation: Google Translate. According to the script, Center 795 was created as a covert unit of roughly 500 officers, allegedly financed by billionaire arms dealer Andrei Bokarev and hidden inside the Kalashnikov organization. One of its operatives, former FSB Alfa veteran Denis Alimov, recruited Serbian-speaking Darko Durovic to help track targets connected to Chechen exile Akhmed Zakaev, offering $60,000 upfront and as much as $1.5 million per target. There was just one problem: Alimov spoke Russian and Durovic spoke Serbian, so they repeatedly used Google Translate while exchanging instructions through an encrypted messaging app, including discussions about targets, weapons, and locations. Once Durovic came under FBI scrutiny, investigators were able to monitor his internet activity, including what he entered into Google Translate, quietly building their case while the men continued communicating. Durovic was arrested in March 2025, and Alimov was later detained after flying to Bogotá under a false identity in February 2026. This is the bizarre story of an operation designed to remain invisible, and how a simple language barrier helped unravel one of Russia's alleged secret assassination networks.
