Description

Artificial intelligence is becoming more powerful than ever, but a series of disturbing incidents suggests that AI may already be creating dangers its developers cannot fully control. In Yemen, Anthropic reported discovering Houthi operatives using its Claude chatbot to help develop guided rockets and advanced missile concepts, even managing to test a weapon before their accounts were shut down. In Spain, authorities reported a cyberattack carried out by an AI agent operating autonomously, raising fears that future hackers could deploy entire armies of virtual attackers capable of infiltrating computer systems without constant human supervision. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, six Russian Molniya drones reportedly used experimental AI targeting technology during a deadly attack on Zaporizhzhia, where a drone struck an apartment building and killed three civilians, including a 19-year-old student. But perhaps the most alarming incident involved the United States military, where an AI-generated intelligence report falsely suggested that a Chinese vessel was transporting nuclear weapons equipment toward the Middle East. American forces reportedly began preparing an interception operation before discovering that the intelligence was entirely false, narrowly avoiding a potentially dangerous confrontation with China. From autonomous weapons and AI-powered hackers to fabricated military intelligence, these four incidents reveal a terrifying possibility: the greatest danger of artificial intelligence may not be what it is designed to do, but what happens when humans trust it with decisions they can no longer afford to get wrong.
