Description

Phil Penman is a British-born, New York-based photographer who has spent over 25 years capturing the heartbeat of the city’s streets in classic black and white. He’s one of those guys who truly lives and breathes street photography, turning everyday moments into powerful, timeless images that feel raw, honest, and full of life. Originally from a tiny village in Dorset, England, Phil fell in love with New York on a trip as a teenager and knew he had to get there one day. After starting out in local news photography back in the UK, he got his big break working for celebrity news agencies in LA, then made the move to NYC right around 2001. He ended up documenting huge historical moments like the 9/11 attacks, and shot celebrities for big magazines, but his real passion has always been the streets, the regular people, the energy, the grit, and the beauty of ordinary life in the big city. What stands out about Phil’s work is his distinctive black-and-white style. He has an incredible eye for light and shadow, strong compositions, and those fleeting human connections that make you stop and feel something. Whether it’s someone walking alone under the FDR Drive, busy midtown crowds, or quiet pandemic lockdown scenes, his photos tell real stories about New York and its people. His images from the COVID lockdown were so impactful that the U.S. Library of Congress acquired them, putting his work alongside legends like Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. That’s how strong his documentation of modern history is. Phil has published several successful books. His first one, Street (2019), became a bestseller and captured the raw energy of the city’s boroughs. Then came New York Street Diaries (2023), which was also a hit, featured at MoMA, and sold thousands of copies. His latest, Street Scenes (2025), expands beyond New York to cities around the world while keeping that same signature vibe. Beyond shooting, he’s a Leica Ambassador and teaches workshops all over the globe through
