Description

I moved to the Philippines thinking I could build a comfortable life for around $1,000 a month. One year later, I added up everything I had spent. The total was roughly $16,000. So where did the extra money go? In this story, I walk through my entire first year living in the Philippines — from trying to find a condo and paying the move-in costs, to my first electric bill, grocery spending, transportation, visa extensions, the ACR I-Card, banking problems, and the little expenses I never thought about before moving abroad. I also share what my normal monthly budget eventually looked like, what I wish I had brought from America, what I definitely didn't need to bring, and the five things I would do differently if I arrived in the Philippines tomorrow. Some of the costs covered include: 🇵🇭 ₱22,000 monthly condo rent ⚡ Nearly ₱7,000 for my first full electric bill 🛒 Around ₱18,000 in groceries during my first month 🚕 Transportation and everyday Grab expenses 🛂 Tourist visa extensions and Immigration costs 💰 Around ₱60,000 for a normal month once I settled in 📊 Roughly ₱900,000 spent during my first full year Living in the Philippines can still be affordable, but I learned there is a big difference between your monthly cost of living and how much money you actually need to move here and get established. If you're already living in the Philippines, what surprised you most during your first year? And if you're thinking about moving here, what expense are you still trying to figure out?
