Two honest things: Apollo wasn't "gay" — he pursued women just as fiercely as men, in a world that didn't split desire into our categories at all. And I chose to sit with the strangest pattern in his myths — that nearly every man he loved ends up dead and turned into a flower or a tree — because what the Greeks were really saying with it is quietly devastating.
The sun god, the very image of male beauty, loved more mortal men than any other god in the pantheon. And he lost most of them. Each time, he turned his grief into something the living world would keep forever — a spring flower, a graveyard tree. So why does the god of male love leave a trail of blossoms behind him?
A discus thrown in play. A city that mourned a god's male lover for a thousand years. A god made a farmhand for love. And a flower that still blooms every spring.

From the hyacinth to the cypress, this is the honest story of Apollo, the Greek god most tied to the love of men — the beloveds later ages quietly erased, and the tender truth hidden in how their stories end.
🎬 5 things I learned making this:
1. When ancient writers listed the gods' loves, Apollo's roll of male beloveds was the longest of any god. He was, in effect, the divine patron of love between men.
2. A whole Greek city mourned and then celebrated Hyacinthus — a mortal man loved by a god — every single year, in one of its most important festivals.
3. Apollo was once made to serve a mortal king as a lowly herdsman — and the poets say he did it willingly, because he'd fallen in love with the king.
4. The pattern that got me: nearly all his male loves die and become flowers or trees. It's the Greeks encoding a hard truth — male beauty is dazzling but fleeting, like a bloom.
5. Later ages kept his failed chase after a woman (Daphne) in every painting, and quietly dropped the men he actually loved and grieved.
