Description

There's a question under ten words long that can be worth more than 2,000 dollars a year to some Americans over 55. Most people never say it out loud. And the biggest savings don't happen at a store. These nine senior discounts aren't hidden. They're written into state laws, federal rules, and company policies. But they're almost never automatic. In nearly every case, the money only shows up if you ask for it. In this episode of Juniper Court, we sort the nine discounts into three simple groups. YOUR MONTHLY BILLS 1. The senior property tax break. Most states offer older homeowners some kind of property tax relief. It might take part of your home's value off the books, put a cap on your bill, or let you pay later. Texas and Colorado are two real examples. Most of these breaks aren't automatic, so you have to file a form with your county tax office. 2. The older driver insurance discount. In more than 30 states, insurance companies must offer a discount to older drivers who take an approved safe driving class. Discounts of 5 to 10 percent are common, and they often last three years. 3. A 55 and older phone plan. Some big phone companies have offered plans just for customers 55 and up. We show you a two-minute way to check whether you're overpaying. GOVERNMENT MONEY 4. The new senior tax break. Starting with tax year 2025, people 65 and older can take up to 6,000 dollars more off their taxable income, through 2028. There are income limits. 5. Help paying for Medicare. Medicare Savings Programs can pay your Part B monthly price if your income and savings are limited. Extra Help can lower your prescription costs. Many people who qualify never sign up. 6. Half-price bus and train rides. Under federal rules, many transit systems must let older adults ride for no more than half price during quieter hours. YOUR LIFESTYLE 7. The America the Beautiful Senior Pass. If you're 62 or older, 80 dollars gets you a lifetime pass to more than 2,000 federal outdoor sites. 8. Free or cheap college classes. States like Georgia and Texas let older adults take public college classes free or at a deep discount. 9. Everyday senior discounts. Restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, and more. Plus how to ask without feeling awkward, and when the senior price isn't the best price. Then we get to the real reason so many careful people miss this money. It comes down to three forces: how we see ourselves, the hassle of paperwork, and our habit of running on autopilot. You'll leave with a simple one-a-week plan to claim what you've earned. The senior tax break and the extra amount for people 65 and older are from the IRS. The 2026 Part B monthly price is from Medicare. Extra Help estimates are from Social Security. Senior Pass prices are from the National Park Service. The research on aging and attitude is from Becca Levy at Yale. Ages, dollar amounts, and rules vary by state and change over time. Always check the current rules where you live before you count on any of them. This video is for education only and is not financial advice. Watching for a parent or grandparent? Send this to them, or sit down and go through the list together. It could be the most valuable hour you spend with them all year. Your next step: pick the one discount you'll ask for first this week, type its number from 1 to 9 in the comments, and subscribe to Juniper Court for simple, honest money explainers every week.
