Description
Go downstairs and put your hand flat on your furnace. It is cold — of course it is, it is September. That machine has been sitting in the dark since March, six months, collecting dust, and nobody in this house has thought about it once.
And in a few weeks, on the first cold night of the year, somebody is going to walk over to the thermostat and push it up to seventy. And that machine is going to be asked to go from six months asleep to full fire in about four seconds, on the coldest night so far, with the whole family in the house.
Mi amigo, that moment is the hardest thing that happens to a furnace all year — and what happens in that moment was decided by what you did in September.
Here is the arithmetic. The man who comes out in January charges $300 before he opens his bag — after hours, in the snow, on an emergency, with a cold house and children in it, and he knows exactly what that is worth to you. **And the man who does these three things in September never meets him.** One hour, this month, and about five dollars.
📅 WHY SEPTEMBER SPECIFICALLY: right now that furnace is cold and calm and nothing is being asked of it — if something is wrong, today it is a project. Wait six weeks and every furnace in your region gets switched on within two days of each other, and every one that was going to fail fails in the same week. That is when every heating company in the county says "we can get somebody out Thursday." Thursday, in a cold house. You are not just avoiding a repair — you are avoiding the week when everybody needs the same man at once.
✅ THING ONE — THE $5 FILTER
Hold the old one up to a light. If you cannot see through it, that is not a filter, it is a wall. ⚠️ And do NOT buy the $30 one with the big number and the health words — in a standard 1" slot that dense filter chokes the airflow, heat piles up inside the machine instead of going into your house, and the safety switch starts shutting the furnace down. A plain pleated $5 filter changed OFTEN beats an expensive one left in too long, every time. Check the ARROW points toward the furnace. Then write today's DATE on the cardboard edge with a marker. Every month or two — and monthly if you burn candles (wax film strangles a filter while looking like nothing) or have dogs.
✅ THING TWO — VACUUM IT OUT, AND POLISH THE FLAME SENSOR ($0)
⚠️ Power off at BOTH the wall switch (it looks exactly like a light switch — people flip it by accident) AND the breaker.
Panels off, shop vacuum inside the cabinet: the floor, around the blower, and the blower wheel's little curved fins if you can reach them. **Dust is insulation.** A dust-packed blower physically moves less air, and less air means heat piling up and a motor running hot. This is the same disease as the AC coil in its felt coat, the dryer vent packed with lint, and the fridge coils in gray fur — machines here do not die of old age, they die of DIRT.
Then the FLAME SENSOR — the free repair that prevents more January calls than anything else on this list. A thin rod the size of a pencil sitting in the burner flame, one screw, one wire. Its job is to confirm a fire is actually lit. A season's film builds on it, the machine can no longer sense the flame, and it shuts the gas off — because as far as it knows, gas is pouring into your basement unlit. **That is the furnace that lights for four seconds and dies, over and over, in January.** One screw, note the orientation, polish it GENTLY with fine steel wool or a scouring pad (polishing clean, not sanding down — do not gouge or bend it), wipe, reinstall.
✅ THING THREE — THE VENTS OUTSIDE AND THE CONDENSATE
High-efficiency furnace? It vents out the SIDE WALL through white PVC — usually two pipes, one intake, one exhaust. Go outside and LOOK IN THEM. Over the summer things move into a nice sheltered pipe: wasp nests, bird nests, webs, leaves in the elbow. A blocked vent shuts the furnace down cold — the pressure switch senses it cannot breathe and refuses to fire. **That is a January no-heat call that was a wasp nest in September.** Also note how high they sit: if they are low and you get snow, a drift or a plow bank can bury them mid-storm.
Older furnace on a metal flue? Check it is solidly connected, slopes UP toward the chimney with no sag, and no rust flaking at the joints.
And the CONDENSATE: a high-efficiency furnace makes water when it runs. That drain line and trap grow slime, and when it clogs the machine senses it is full of water and shuts down. Find the clear tube, flush the trap, and if you have a condensate pump, pop the lid, clean the float, check the discharge tube.
