Description
In a ruined watchtower in the Gobi Desert, an archaeologist found a bag of letters written around 313 that had waited nearly 1,600 years to be delivered, and none of them ever arrived. The Silk Road was not a road that carried silk across the world; it was a chain of strangers, each carrying things one stretch and handing them on. So what was it, if it was never one road and silk was never the main thing on it, and why is the world paying to rebuild it in 2026?
This history documentary covers the entire history of the Silk Road: Emperor Wu and Zhang Qian, the horses of Ferghana, Gan Ying and Rome, the Sogdian merchants and their lost letters, Faxian and Xuanzang, smuggled silkworms and Justinian, Tang Chang'an, the Christian stone of Xi'an, the battle of Talas and papermaking, An Lushan, the Uyghur horse trade, Genghis Khan and Samarkand, the Mongol peace, the plague road to the Black Death, Timur and Zheng He, Richthofen, the Mogao cave and the Diamond Sutra, Dostyk and the Dzungarian Gate, and the China-Europe railway during the Strait of Hormuz closure in 2026.
