Finding Fidel: The Story of Castro’s Rise to Power | FULL DOC | SLICE WHO

In 1958, war cameraman Erik Durschmied travelled deep into Cuba’s Sierra Maestra mountains to meet a little-known rebel leader named Fidel Castro. Just weeks later, Castro and his fighters entered Havana, transforming the course of Cuban history. Durschmied spent weeks with Castro’s guerrillas, filming their daily lives and recording what is believed to be the only known English-language interview with Castro from the period before he came to power. Fifty years later, Durschmied returned to Cuba to retrace his journey and reflect on the revolution, Castro’s rise and the extraordinary role the media played in shaping his image. Through rare footage and Durschmied’s personal memories, Finding Fidel offers a unique glimpse of Castro before he became one of the most controversial political figures of the 20th century.
