Description

Every October I spend about thirty minutes at the Dollar Tree, and it's the most useful half hour of my whole winter. Eleven things go in my basket. Two things I walk right past, and one of them is all over the internet right now as a "heater." It isn't. My husband Walt spent 38 years climbing poles for our electric co-op up here on the Iron Range, so in our house we got ready in October, not the night the wind picked up. Everything on this list is cheap, light enough for an older body, and safe to use indoors. Nothing burns. In this video: • The packet you tuck in your mittens, and the warning on the back of it that people skip • How to use an emergency blanket so you don't feel like a baked potato • The pool noodle that keeps your one warm room warm • Two stick-on hooks and a quilt: how Walt "shrank the house" • The freezer bag trick that fills your freezer and then becomes drinking water • The dollar light that matters more than people think, and why falls belong in this conversation • Why I get the candlelight without the candle • The two things I never buy, including the one the internet loves • Number eleven: the dollar item Walt bought for every house on our road CHAPTERS 0:00 Thirty minutes in October, and the two things I skip 1:03 #1 Hand and toe warmers (read the package) 1:35 #2 Emergency blankets, used the right way 1:59 #3 The pool noodle 2:25 #4 Stick-on hooks and a quilt over the doorway 2:55 #5 Shower curtain liner and painter's tape 3:23 The winter I heated the whole county 4:00 #6 Freezer bags: 48 hours vs 24 hours 4:30 #7 Tap lights for the bathroom, hall and stairs 5:02 #8 Flameless tea lights 5:25 #9 Cat litter for the front steps 5:48 #10 One labeled bin 6:12 The two things I walk past 7:34 #11 The one Walt would buy if he could only buy one 8:53 Do this one thing this week 💬 Tell me in the comments: what's the one dollar-store thing you won't go through a winter without? I read every one of them. About this channel: June is a character. Her face and voice are made with AI, and our small team researches and writes every script from the public safety guidance listed above. This video is general safety information, not medical or professional advice. In an emergency, call 911. Stay warm, stay safe, and check on your neighbor. #poweroutage #winterprep #emergencypreparedness
