Description

In the mountains of northwestern Wyoming, archaeologists have documented an extraordinary hunting landscape known as Wiggins Fork. What initially appears to be scattered stone across the hills is actually part of an extensive system of stone alignments, drive lanes, traps, and natural terrain features designed to influence the movement of bison. Rather than simply pursuing individual animals, Indigenous hunters could use the landscape itself to guide groups of bison toward carefully selected locations. The surviving features reveal sophisticated knowledge of animal behavior, topography, cooperation, and large-scale hunting strategy, transforming an enormous section of mountain terrain into part of the hunting system. In this video, we explore how the Wiggins Fork complex worked, how archaeologists recognize ancient drive lines among seemingly ordinary stones, what these structures reveal about communal bison hunting, and why this remarkable engineered landscape is so different from the way large animals are managed and hunted today. Disclaimer This video is created for educational and entertainment purposes and discusses archaeological research concerning Wiggins Fork and Indigenous bison-hunting landscapes in Wyoming. Some information may be simplified for storytelling clarity, and some images, animations, maps, hunting scenes, ancient landscapes, and archaeological reconstructions may have been created or enhanced using artificial intelligence (AI). The phrases “Unexplained Find” and “Has No Modern Equivalent” are dramatic descriptions of the unusual scale, preservation, and organization of the archaeological landscape. They do not mean the site is scientifically inexplicable or that no comparable communal hunting systems existed elsewhere. The precise function, chronology, and use of individual stone features may remain subject to archaeological interpretation, and reconstructions should be distinguished from what the physical evidence directly demonstrates.
