Description
9 Things Veterans Buy at an Army Surplus Store That Civilians Walk Past - Prepping Guide 2026
Army surplus stores can look like piles of old uniforms, bags and military leftovers. But if you know what to look for, some of the least exciting items can be extremely practical additions to an emergency kit.
In this video, we’re looking at 9 Army surplus items that veterans and experienced preparedness-minded shoppers often recognize for their durability, simplicity and multiple uses.
Think military canteens, field packs, wool blankets, wet-weather gear, sleeping equipment, duffel bags and compact field tools. Actual Army organizational-equipment documentation includes items such as canteens, wool blankets, waterproof clothing bags, field packs, sleeping mats and wet-weather gear, showing that these aren't simply products given a “military-style” label by retailers.
What makes surplus equipment interesting for civilian preparedness isn't necessarily that it is military-grade. It's that much of it was designed around basic problems that also appear during civilian emergencies: carrying water, staying warm, keeping equipment dry, moving supplies and functioning when normal infrastructure isn't available.
That philosophy lines up surprisingly well with the Army's own current preparedness guidance. Ready Army recommends maintaining supplies for at least 72 hours and specifically advises choosing long-lasting items with multiple uses. It also recommends keeping customized emergency kits at home, in a vehicle and at work.
Federal civilian guidance follows the same basic principle. Ready.gov recommends essentials including water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, a radio, basic tools and portable emergency supplies.
But buying surplus requires some common sense. Used equipment should be inspected for damaged straps, degraded waterproof coatings, corrosion, contamination and missing components. “Military surplus” also doesn't automatically mean something is better or cheaper than a modern civilian equivalent.
And one clarification about the title: there isn't reliable evidence that veterans universally buy these exact nine products while civilians ignore them. That's the hook. The useful part is understanding why certain boring surplus items continue to work well for preparedness decades after they were designed.
We’ll reveal all 9 and explain what each one is actually useful for before you spend your money.
What’s the best Army surplus item you’ve ever bought?
