📘 Get Know Your Rights here: https://knowrightsuk.gumroad.com/l/know-your-rights
You said it. Calm, polite: "No, officer. I don't consent to a search." And he doesn't walk away. What comes next is a second wave of four lines, every one built to turn your no back into a yes. Saying no isn't the risky moment. The 60 seconds after it are, when decent people talk themselves back into a yes. Here are the four lines, what each one really is, the calm answer that holds your ground, and the moment your no stops mattering because he has a real power.
Here is what we cover:
What you must do: Road Traffic Act 1988, s.163, a duty to stop, not a power to search. Name, address and licence
Why he asks for consent, and the surprise in PACE Code A 1.5: an officer "must not search a person, even with his or her consent, where no power to search is applicable"
For the car, Code B 5.2: you must be told you're "not obliged to consent" and can withdraw it "at any time"
Line one: "Why, have you got something to hide?" Code A 2.9 says refusing to answer questions can't provide grounds, and 2.6B says a hunch "can never" count
Line two: "The easy way or the hard way." Code B 5.3 on duress, and the question: what power are you using?
Line three: "Step out of the car for me." s.163 is a duty to stop, nothing more, and how to tell a request from a requirement
Line four: the waiting game. Code A 2.11, "There is no power to stop or detain a person in order to find grounds for a search", and 2.10, free to leave
The honest part: when your no stops mattering. PACE s.1, Misuse of Drugs Act s.23, CJPOA s.60, GO WISELY (Code A 3.8), and you don't have to give your name for the search record (4.3A)
Say this, and the whole thing played out
Everything here is tied to real sources: legislation.gov.uk (PACE 1984, Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, CJPOA 1994, RTA 1988, Police Act 1996) and PACE Codes A (December 2023) and B (2023) on gov.uk. Checked October 2026.
One honest note. If an officer has a genuine power, your consent was never needed. Comply, never resist, never obstruct, and ask for the grounds and the record. Refuse consent, never a lawful order.
FREE HELP FIRST. If a search ever becomes an arrest, ask for the duty solicitor. It is free, at any hour.

England and Wales — Scotland is a separate legal system. General information about published law, not advice about your situation. Comply with any lawful requirement, never lie, and never resist.
Has an officer ever asked to search your car? Type the county, nothing else.
