Description

Every transit through the Panama Canal draws on a limited freshwater supply. When Gatun Lake falls, the canal can reduce daily transits, restrict ship draft, and force some vessels to carry less cargo. This video follows the water through the system — from the reservoirs above sea level, through the lock chambers, into water-saving basins, and eventually toward the ocean. It also explains why seawater is difficult to substitute, how the canal tries to reuse water, and why rainfall can place a hard limit on one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
