Description
Why Japan Put a Highway 60 Meters Under the Sea
Deep beneath Tokyo Bay, Japan built one of the most extraordinary highways ever constructed. The Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line runs through incredibly soft seabed, with parts of the tunnel sitting around 60 meters below the water.
But how do you build a massive highway through ground that behaves like wet pudding?
Engineers strengthened the seabed, used enormous tunnel boring machines, and even froze seawater to create a temporary frozen wall while connecting the tunnels deep beneath the ocean.
In this video, we explore the incredible engineering behind the Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line, from its underwater tunnels and artificial islands to the massive Aqua Bridge and the dangerous frozen-ring docking method that made the project possible.

📌 What You’ll Learn In This Video:
✔ Why Tokyo Bay's seabed was so diffi cult to build on
✔ How engineers strengthened the soft marine clay
✔ How the tunnels were built 60 meters underwater
✔ How frozen seawater helped connect the underwater tunnels
✔ How the artifi cial islands and Aqua Bridge were built
✔ How the tunnel handles fi res and earthquakes
✔ Why the Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line is an incredible engineering achievement
