Description
Every 15 seconds, your smart TV may be taking a fingerprint of what's on the screen and sending it to a server. That's not a theory: it's in a peer-reviewed study.
• Proven (2024 lab study, one LG and one Samsung): with tracking on, the LG sent a fingerprint about every 15 seconds, the Samsung about once a minute, even when the TV was just a screen for a laptop or a console over HDMI.
• Claimed and denied: Gamers Nexus' investigation said LG TVs capture audio in standby. LG says it's not true, and it hasn't been independently confirmed. Not false, not settled.
• The switch works: when the researchers opted out, the ACR traffic stopped completely. On LG it's called Live Plus; on Samsung, Viewing Information Services.
