Description
A casino with cameras over every table lost 10 GB of data to a computer in Finland, and it left through a smart fish tank. The casino had even put the tank on its own VPN. It didn't matter: the tank still had "sporadic communications" with company devices, and a rarely used door is still a door.
• What Darktrace reported (Global Threat Report 2017, case 6): a connected fish tank on its own VPN, 10 GB sent to a device in Finland, spotted as soon as its system was installed.
• Caveat: this is Darktrace's own account. It sells the system that caught the attack, the casino was never named, and nobody outside the company has confirmed the details.
• The lesson for your home: smart TVs, doorbells, cameras and plugs are small computers on the same Wi-Fi as your laptop. Change default passwords, keep them updated, and put them on your router's guest network.
