Description

In 1935, as Italy faced international sanctions following its invasion of Ethiopia, Benito Mussolini launched a powerful propaganda campaign aimed at the Italian public—especially women. He called on Italian wives to surrender their gold wedding rings to help fund the state during the economic crisis. In return, the women received iron bands engraved with the words “Oro alla Patria”—Gold for the Fatherland. The campaign framed personal sacrifice as patriotic duty, turning marriage symbols into tools of state loyalty. By the end of the initiative, the regime had collected an estimated 35 tonnes of gold. The campaign became one of the most striking examples of how authoritarian governments used symbolism, nationalism, and social pressure to mobilize civilians during times of crisis. ⚠️ This video is for EDUCATIONAL and HISTORICAL purposes ONLY.
