Description

After slavery ended, freedom did not automatically give Black Americans land, wealth, or economic independence. Sharecropping created a system in which many Black farmers worked land they did not own while depending on landowners and merchants for supplies and credit. Using disturbing 1966 documentary footage of a Black sharecropper being questioned about whether his white employers had “been nice” to him, this AfriEye documentary examines the deeper relationship between economic dependence, paternalism, and freedom—and asks what freedom means when saying “no” can threaten your livelihood. #AfriEye #BlackHistory #Sharecropping #AmericanHistory #Slavery #HistoryDocumentary
