Description
Most people grow up carrying tiny, unremarkable struggles they never bother to tell anyone about. These are not dramatic sorrows or life-altering hardships, just the dull, awkward, slightly frustrating moments of everyday life that feel silly to voice out loud. You brush them off, keep them to yourself, and move on, yet they stick gently in your memory, lingering long after bigger events fade away. It is these trivial, relatable experiences that make you glance at other people and wonder silently: who else has gone through this exact same awkward, unglamorous phase? Who truly knows this quiet kind of tiredness?
I was twenty-one, stuck in that messy in-between stage of young adulthood, where I was no longer a careless student but far from being a fully independent adult. Every day blurred into the next, filled with endless routine: early morning classes, rushed takeout meals, part-time weekend shifts, and late nights spent finishing coursework. I was not miserable or broken, just constantly drained, trapped in a loop of small stresses that felt too minor to complain about and too heavy to ignore. No big crisis happened, but every single day felt like a quiet uphill battle.
One ordinary Saturday afternoon perfectly summed up this strange, unspoken weariness. I had finished a four-hour shift at a local retail store, restocking shelves and assisting customers on my feet the entire time. The weather was gloomy and muggy, the kind of gray, lifeless day that drains your mood without any obvious reason. I clocked out at dusk, exhausted, my legs sore and my mind foggy from hours of repetitive work. I had planned to head straight back to my rented apartment, shower, and collapse into bed, desperate for a quiet night to recharge.
But small, annoying mishaps stacked up one after another, the kind of petty troubles that feel ridiculous to get upset over but chip away at your patience bit by bit. My public transit card suddenly stopped working at the station gate, leaving me stranded in the crowd of rushing commuters. I fumbled with it repeatedly, cheeks flushing with quiet embarrassment as people hurried past me, unbothered and in their own rhythms. I dug through my backpack frantically, searching for spare change or my backup card, only to find my portable charger dead and my phone battery dropping to single digits.
After ten awkward minutes of troubleshooting, I finally managed to tap through the gate, but I missed the last direct train to my neighborhood. The next ride would take an extra forty minutes, with two transfers across unfamiliar stations. There was no one to text for help, no friend nearby to pick me up, no easy fix to my small mess. Standing on the crowded platform, surrounded by strangers talking and laughing, I felt a strange, hollow loneliness wash over me. I was not sad or heartbroken, just utterly worn out, tired of fighting tiny, meaningless battles every single day.
Instead of letting frustration build up, I leaned against the cold metal railing and forced myself to relax. I put my backpack on the ground, stretched my stiff shoulders, and watched the trains pull in and out of the station. I watched groups of friends heading out for dinner, parents carrying sleeping children home, workers scrolling through their phones after a long day. Everyone around me looked like they had their lives slightly more put-together, like their days were smoother and less chaotic than mine.
As I waited, I reflected on how we all hide these small failures and frustrations from the world. Social media and casual conversations are full of good news, happy moments, and steady progress. No one posts about breaking their transit card after a tiring shift, no one shares the story of waiting alone for a delayed train, no one talks about the quiet exhaustion of juggling school, work, and basic adult responsibilities with no guidance or support. We all pretend our lives are steady and effortless, even when we are constantly stumbling through tiny, uncelebrated struggles.
The delayed train finally arrived, and the ride home was slow and bumpy. I stared out the window at the darkening city streets, at the glowing shop signs and lit apartment windows, each one holding someone else’s quiet, unspoken tiredness. By the time I walked through my apartment door, it was late, and I was more exhausted than before, but a strange sense of clarity settled over me. Those small, awkward, cringey, frustrating moments are not unique to me. They are universal pieces of growing up.
