Description

The Honeymooners' Ralph Kramden earned $62 a week driving a bus in 1955 Brooklyn. Ed Norton made the exact same pay, but his apartment was always nicer. So how did two men with the same paycheck end up living such different lives? We put real 1955 prices behind the Kramdens' cold-water walk-up at 328 Chauncey Street, from the icebox to the rent to the paycheck. It turns out Ralph was poorer than the show let on, and the reason Norton lived better had nothing to do with how much he earned. Spotlight Moments - Ralph's $1.55 an hour against a real Brooklyn bus driver's $1.86 - Norton's 19 charge accounts, and America's jump to $28 billion in installment debt - The rent fight over $5 that leaves Ralph and Alice out in the snow - Ralph's get-rich schemes: the Handy Housewife Helper, the $50,000 suitcase and the $99,000 Answer - Alice lying about her marriage to get a job, because of a real "marriage bar" - Jackie Gleason's $11 million deal, and why he walked away with $7 million still left on it Classic TV sitcoms rarely told you what anything cost. The Honeymooners did, and when you check the numbers the show becomes a real-world portrait of 1950s money. A family could stay out of debt by buying almost nothing, while the family upstairs bought the 50s dream on payments. It is also Jackie Gleason's own childhood, rebuilt from memory. Did you ever wonder how Ralph and Alice got by on $62 a week? Tell us in the comments: were you Team Ralph with no debt, or Team Norton with the nicer furniture?
