Description

The Greeks Were Never What We Thought — DNA Reveals Their True Ancestry For more than a century, the origins of the ancient Greeks were one of the great unsolved mysteries of archaeology. When Heinrich Schliemann pulled golden death masks from the shaft graves of Mycenae in the 1870s, and when Arthur Evans uncovered the sprawling palace of Knossos on Crete at the turn of the twentieth century, they proved that the Bronze Age world behind Homer's Iliad had genuinely existed. But proving these civilizations were real only deepened the mystery of who the people who built them actually were. Evans himself believed the Minoans were foreigners, transplanted from Egypt or the Near East. Others believed they were the ancestors of modern Greeks. Nobody could prove anything, because the tools to read the ancestry of ancient bones did not yet exist. Then, in 2017, a team led by Iosif Lazaridis at Harvard Medical School, working with David Reich, Johannes Krause, and George Stamatoyannopoulos, extracted DNA from nineteen ancient individuals — Minoans from Crete, Mycenaeans from the mainland, and their Anatolian neighbors — and read the answer that had been sealed inside those bones for over three thousand years. What they found overturned a century of assumptions. The Minoans were not foreign invaders. They were locals, descended from the first Neolithic farmers of the Aegean and Anatolia. But both the Minoans and Mycenaeans also carried a quarter or more of their ancestry from populations related to the Caucasus and Iran — a connection to the ancient Near East that had never been visible in the archaeological record. And the Mycenaeans carried something the Minoans did not: steppe ancestry from the north, the genetic signature of the migration that brought the Greek language itself into the Aegean. The 2023 follow-up study of one hundred and two ancient individuals confirmed and deepened everything, revealing two distinct waves of migration that built the Greek population over thousands of years. And both studies answered the most charged question of all — modern Greeks are, measurably and unmistakably, descended from the Mycenaeans. The thread of continuity from the Bronze Age to today is not a myth. It is a genetic fact. This video breaks down exactly what the DNA revealed, why it shocked the historians who had argued about Greek origins for a hundred years, and what it means for who the ancient Greeks — and modern Greeks — really are.
