Description

The Punjabis Were Never Who We Thought — DNA Finally Reveals The Truth The land between the five rivers has been home to one of the most strategically important populations in the history of human migration. Punjab sits at the exact crossroads where three of the biggest demographic forces in South Asian prehistory — the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, the Iranian plateau farmers, and the Bronze Age steppe pastoralists from Central Asia — all converged on the same stretch of earth within a few thousand years of each other. The result is a genetic profile so layered and so internally complex that modern Punjabis carry within them the ancestral signatures of populations that once lived thousands of miles apart and had no awareness of each other's existence. In 2019, a landmark study by Vagheesh Narasimhan, David Reich, and colleagues published in Science analyzed ancient DNA from 523 individuals across South and Central Asia — the largest ancient DNA study of the region ever conducted — and documented what that convergence actually looked like in the genome. The Rakhigarhi individual, sequenced from the heart of the Indus Valley Civilization by Vasant Shinde, Narasimhan, and Reich in a companion Cell study the same year, showed almost no steppe ancestry at all — meaning the people who built Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, two of the great ancient cities of the world, were largely replaced in the genetic sense by incoming steppe pastoralist populations who arrived after the civilization's decline. Those incoming populations carried the ancestor of the Indo-Aryan language that became Sanskrit and eventually Punjabi. The people who speak Punjabi today are the descendants of that mixing — and the proportions of each ancestral stream in their genome vary dramatically depending on community, caste, region, and religious background in ways that the DNA is only now making legible. This is what the ancient DNA actually found about the people of Punjab. And it is not the story that any history class ever told. This video is based entirely on peer-reviewed research.
