Description

Hans Spatzenegger was one of the most brutal SS officials within the Nazi concentration camp system and a key figure in the machinery of terror at Mauthausen during the Second World War. Born on 1 March 1900 in Laufen, then part of the German Empire, Spatzenegger was a trained locksmith who joined the Nazi Party in 1931 and the SS in 1932, drawn in by economic collapse, radical ideology, and the promise of power. After Adolf Hitler seized control of Germany in 1933, Spatzenegger was assigned to Dachau concentration camp, where he was trained under the violent camp system developed by Theodor Eicke. Dachau became a “school of brutality,” shaping guards who would later staff camps across the Reich. In August 1938, shortly after the Anschluss of Austria, Spatzenegger was transferred to the newly established Mauthausen concentration camp near Linz. There, he became director of the camp’s granite quarries, the deadliest labor site in the entire system. Prisoners were forced to haul massive stone blocks up the infamous “Stairs of Death” under constant beatings, starvation, and exposure. Thousands died from exhaustion, falls, executions, or being pushed from quarry cliffs. Spatzenegger was feared for his sadism, routinely staging public beatings, throwing prisoners onto electrified fences, forcing inmates off cliffs, and using his dog to maul prisoners to death. He also took part in mass executions, including the murder of Dutch and British SOE agents in 1944, and participated in the brutal manhunt known as the “Mühlviertel Rabbit Hunt,” in which escaped Soviet prisoners of war were hunted down and murdered with the assistance of civilians. As Nazi Germany collapsed, Spatzenegger fled but was captured in 1946. Tried at the Dachau Mauthausen Trials, multiple survivors testified to his cruelty. Found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity, Hans Spatzenegger was sentenced to death and executed by hanging in 1947. His legacy remains inseparable from the industrialize
