Yefrosinya Zenkova was only 18 when she became one of the youngest Soviet partisan leaders resisting Nazi occupation in Belarus. Born in 1923 into a peasant family in Ushaly, she joined the underground struggle after witnessing the brutal invasion of the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa. Zenkova founded and led the “Young Avengers,” a Komsomol resistance group that conducted over 20 sabotage missions. Operating near Obol, the group derailed trains, destroyed infrastructure, and even assassinated high-ranking German officers using hidden magnetic mines. Despite facing enormous danger, Zenkova evaded arrest when her comrades were captured and executed following a betrayal. In a tragic act of Nazi retaliation, her mother Marfa was executed in her place. After the war, Zenkova dedicated her life to rebuilding efforts, working in the Vitebsk military recruitment center and inspiring future generations with her speeches. In 1958, she was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, and in 1976 became an honorary citizen of Vitebsk. Her bravery, leadership, and sacrifice represent the extraordinary role women played in World War II’s Eastern Front. Zenkova’s legacy stands as a testament to youthful resistance, the pain of occupation, and the undying spirit of those who stood against Nazi terror.
