Description

Martin Sommer was one of the most sadistic SS officers in the entire Nazi concentration camp system—a man whose cruelty earned him the nickname “The Hangman of Buchenwald.” Born in 1915, Sommer joined the SS in the 1930s and was first stationed at Dachau, where he quickly became known for his violent temperament. But it was at Buchenwald where his brutality reached new depths. Assigned as a medical orderly and prison block guard, Sommer turned the camp’s punishment bunker into a chamber of death. Prisoners were beaten with metal rods, hung by their wrists, injected with air bubbles or carbolic acid, and left to die beneath his bunk. At least 40 inmates were killed by Sommer personally—though survivor accounts suggest the real number may have been much higher. Among his victims were Catholic priests, including Blessed Otto Neururer, who died after being hung upside down and tortured for days. Sommer also collaborated closely with Ilse Koch, the wife of camp commandant Karl-Otto Koch, infamous for her own acts of sadism and perversion. Together they helped make Buchenwald one of the most feared camps in the Third Reich. After the war, Sommer was arrested and put on trial in West Germany. He was charged with 53 counts of murder and numerous other crimes. In 1958, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, but his failing health led to early release in 1971. Paralyzed and confined to a care facility, Sommer died in obscurity in 1988. This documentary investigates Sommer’s rise within the SS, his horrific crimes at Buchenwald and Dachau, and the postwar reckoning that followed. His story is a chilling reminder of how ideological extremism and unchecked authority can transform an ordinary man into an architect of terror and death. Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp.
