Description

Emma Zimmer was one of the most senior and brutal female SS guards in the Nazi concentration camp system. Born in 1888 in the German Empire, she was already in her mid‑forties when Adolf Hitler came to power. Unlike many younger guards, Zimmer represented the older generation of women who actively embraced Nazi ideology and became key enforcers of terror. Her career illustrates how women played a direct and violent role in the Holocaust. Zimmer joined the concentration camp system in 1937 at Lichtenburg, one of the earliest camps for female prisoners. When Lichtenburg closed in 1939, Zimmer was transferred to Ravensbrück, the main women’s concentration camp of Nazi Germany. There, she worked in the punishment bunker and quickly gained a reputation for sadism. In this role, she actively participated in selections for death, sending sick, exhausted, and Jewish prisoners to the Bernburg euthanasia center as part of Action 14f13, an extension of the T‑4 killing program. Hundreds of women from Ravensbrück were murdered as a result of these selections, including prominent political prisoner Olga Benário Prestes. In late 1942, Zimmer was transferred to Auschwitz‑Birkenau, where she continued her violent conduct. Prisoners remembered her as feared and unpredictable, openly threatening inmates with death in the gas chambers. She later headed the women’s camp postal censorship office and was awarded the War Merit Cross, a rare decoration for a female guard, underscoring the regime’s approval of her service. After leaving Auschwitz in 1943, Zimmer attempted to
