Description

every old way written down: https://oldmexicanway.com My mother washed for eight people at a stone lavadero in Guadalajara with one thing on the shelf: a pink bar of soap the size of a brick. When I got my first washing machine at nineteen, she handed me a bar and a kitchen grater, and I have not bought a jug of detergent since. Here is the pink mix, and the seven rules that make it work, including the honest part about who should NOT use it. THE PINK MIX 🧼 1 bar of Zote (leave it unwrapped 3 to 4 days so it grates dry), grated fine 🧂 2 cups washing soda (NOT baking soda) 📦 2 cups borax Stir, jar, LABEL it, and keep it on a high shelf away from children and pets. Do not breathe the dust. THE EIGHT 1️⃣ The pink mix: about six cents a load. 2️⃣ It is SOAP, not detergent. No enzymes, no brighteners. 3️⃣ Your water decides: shake a few flakes in a bottle of tap water. Tall foam and clear water = soft, go ahead. No foam and cloudy water = hard, and soap will gray your whites. Very hard water: keep your detergent and use the bar for stains. 4️⃣ Your machine decides: high-efficiency and front-load = ONE level tablespoon, in the drum, not the drawer. Old top-loader = 2 tablespoons. Cold wash: melt it in a cup of hot water first. Check your manual and warranty. Never in a dishwasher. Run the washer empty on hot with vinegar once a month. 5️⃣ The bar on the stain first: wet the corner, rub the collar, let it sit. Contact and time. 6️⃣ Half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse, and no softener. Never vinegar with bleach. 7️⃣ The sun does the whitening: slowly, on the line. 8️⃣ Never for wool, silk, children's flame-resistant sleepwear, or sports fabric. The honest word: this does not clean better than every detergent. In cold water and hard water, a modern detergent wins. If your whites go gray or your towels feel waxy after a month, stop, wash once on hot with washing soda and a vinegar rinse, and go back to your detergent, at half the cap. Who profits: the jug that is mostly water, the cap line drawn too high, the softener, the scent beads, the stain stick, and the pods with a refill every month. Nobody makes a dollar from a woman with a pink bar, a grater and a clothesline. Tonight, do one: one pink bar, the wet corner on your worst collar, ten minutes, then wash as usual. What bar did YOUR mother keep by the lavadero? Tell me, and your county. I read every one. CHAPTERS 0:00 No detergent in 40 years 1:54 1. The pink mix 4:27 2. Soap, not detergent 5:39 3.
