Description

My October greens grow in five-gallon pickle buckets that came home from a school kitchen for nothing. The plastic planter beside the mums at the garden center runs twenty dollars or better. For thirty-five years I cooked for four hundred children a day in Scioto County, Ohio, and the dill pickle chips for all those hamburgers came in white food-grade buckets. Here are ten things worth planting in one this month, and only the ones that truly make it through an Ohio October. ⚠️ WHAT IS NOT ON MY LIST: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, parsnips and fava beans do not belong in an October bucket in Ohio. And a bucket does not keep roots warmer than the ground; it does the opposite. Push your winter buckets together against the south wall of the house with dry leaves stuffed between them, or set them down in the ground to the rim. This week: get one bucket, drill the holes first, and sow a row of radishes. If you can spare a few dollars for a head of seed garlic, plant a second one. Then tell me in the comments which goes in your first bucket, the collards or the garlic, and which county that bucket sits in. I am a retired school cook and a lifelong home gardener, not an extension agent. Planting dates differ by county, so check your local frost dates. #FallGarden #ContainerGardening #OldFashioned
