Description

For centuries, Stonehenge has been surrounded by unanswered questions. But when researchers turned modern computer vision and machine learning toward its ancient stones, the results revealed something that had been hiding in plain sight. The discovery wasn't a secret chamber or a supernatural message. It was carvings. A 2025 study reanalyzed high-resolution 3D and imaging data from Stonehenge using techniques designed to enhance extremely faint markings. On Stone 53, researchers identified four previously unrecognized carvings, along with additional areas that may represent carvings or alternative interpretations of existing marks. One of the most striking developments was the use of MeshNet, a 3D machine-learning classifier. In testing, it achieved about 90.7% accuracy when distinguishing surfaces with carvings from those without them. The implications are fascinating. Stonehenge may contain far more evidence of prehistoric mark-making than archaeologists previously realized. Some carvings overlap, suggesting that the stones were repeatedly marked and modified over time. So what was being recorded? Tools? Symbols? Ritual imagery? Something we still don't understand? AI hasn't solved Stonehenge's greatest mystery—but it may be giving archaeologists a new way to see details that human eyes have overlooked for thousands of years.
