🔗 Save Thousands on Repairs, Replacements and Power Bills — My Complete Home-Saving Method: https://nakamurasecrets.com
You've probably heard that a refrigerator from 1985 lasted twenty-two years and the one you buy today gives out after eight. A peer-reviewed study that followed appliances in Norway from 1940 to 2022 found refrigerators didn't lose any service life at all. Twenty years is real. It just only happens with two kinds of machine, and the name on the door is about half of the reason.
Before you watch, open your freezer. Is there an icemaker in there, or a dispenser in the door? Consumer Reports found thirty-one percent of refrigerators with an icemaker had trouble with it inside five years. If yours has none, you're already ahead, whatever the brand.
The buy it for life list, with the condition that comes attached to each one:
1. Sub-Zero. Family owned in Madison, Wisconsin since 1945, and the first to bring dual refrigeration to market, with separate sealed systems for the fresh food side and the freezer. The honest arithmetic: Yale Appliance puts a Sub-Zero at $11,600 to $20,400 this year, and a plain top freezer runs about $600. That's nineteen refrigerators. You buy a Sub-Zero for the design, not to save money
2. Whirlpool, only the top freezer with nothing in the door. One compressor, two compartments, a thermostat and a fan, and the parts that wear cost tens of dollars. Yale found the icemaker was the most common failure across more than thirty-three thousand service calls
3. Maytag, only one built before 2006. Whirlpool completed its purchase of Maytag on March 31, 2006, in a deal valued at $2.6 billion including debt. A new Maytag is built on Whirlpool platforms, so you buy it by configuration, not by name. If an old one is still running in your house, keep it running
4. Bosch. Not traded on a stock exchange: the charitable Robert Bosch Stiftung holds about 94 percent of the company. In Consumer Reports' ratings this year Bosch has the highest-rated French door refrigerators, and several 800 Series models run two compressors and two evaporators, the same idea as Sub-Zero at about a quarter of the price, $2,449 to $5,199. The condition: those models carry an icemaker
5. Miele. Still owned by its two founding families, and it supplies original spare parts for up to fifteen years after a model stops being made. California's repair law requires seven. Miele also tests its components to simulate twenty years of use, which is the company's own test, not an outside lab's
6. LG, only without the icemaker, and only after you've read the compressor warranty. The Bentley v. LG class action was filed in June 2019 and got preliminary approval on August 19, 2020, covering about 1.5 million people. LG extended its inverter linear compressor warranty to ten years, parts and labor, on refrigerators built from 2014 through 2022. A refrigerator you buy this year is not automatically under that settlement, so read the terms for that exact model
Why the compressor warranty matters more than the badge: the compressor is the repair that can run past a thousand dollars, and under federal Section 608 refrigerant rules only a certified technician can open the sealed system.
And the limit none of the six can get around: no refrigerator reaches twenty years with dirty condenser coils or a failing door gasket.
Nothing good should ever be wasted. Not the thing in your hands, and not the knowing of how to keep it.
