Description

Ten affordable Japanese ways can update a dated home without remodeling, and the first one costs less than $5 a switch. The last one is the orange in your oak cabinets and trim, and a 5-minute test tells you whether that orange is in the wood or only in the finish on top of it. I'm Richard Nakamura. I fixed appliances for thirty years. The Japanese side comes from Japan's architecture dictionaries and its foreign ministry; the prices and safety notes come from Angi, HomeAdvisor, the EPA and the National Association of Realtors. The 10 updates: 1. The things your hands touch (hikite): every switch plate and outlet cover in one plain finish, under $5 each 2. The walls (shikkui, tsuchikabe, shibui): one quiet matte color per room instead of a $200 to $2,000 paint job per room 3. The vertical blinds come down (sudare): a woven bamboo shade for about $15 to $20 a window 4. The flat hollow doors (kumiko): a simple grid of screen molding for about $20 a door, instead of an ~$800 new door 5. The bifold closet doors (karakami): peel-and-stick paper in the old wave or hemp-leaf patterns 6. The wall-to-wall carpet (tatami, goza): check for hardwood, then one jute or rush rug 7. The bathroom (sunoko): frame the builder mirror in wood, a teak duckboard mat, three matching bottles 8. The busy fabric ("Japan blue"): a plain slipcover ($50 to $200) and one indigo throw, instead of ~$1,800 reupholstery 9. The front walk (tobi-ishi, engawa): stepping stones at about $5 each and a plain bench by the door 10. The orange oak (shiraki): sand a quarter-size spot on the back of a door. Pale wood means it's the finish, not the cabinets (pro refinishing ~$3,100 vs ~$6,200 for new cabinets) Old paint: if your house was built before 1978, the EPA says to have it tested first and to mist the surface with water before you sand or scrape. 🔗 Save Thousands on Repairs, Replacements and Power Bills — My Complete Home-Saving Method: https://nakamurasecrets.com SOURCES • JAANUS (Japanese Architecture and Art Net Users System), hikite — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/h/hikite.htm • JAANUS, shikkui — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/s/shikkui.htm • JAANUS, tsuchikabe — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/t/tsuchikabe.htm • JAANUS, sudare — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/s/sudare.htm • JAANUS, kumiko — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/k/kumiko.htm • JAANUS, karakami — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/k/karakami.htm • JAANUS, asanoha — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/a/asanoha.htm • JAANUS, tatami — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/t/tatami.htm • JAANUS, sunoko — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/s/sunoko.htm • JAANUS, tobiishi — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/t/tobiishi.htm • JAANUS, shiraki — https://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/s/shiraki.htm • Encyclopaedia Britannica, Ise Shrine — https://www.britannica.com/topic/Ise-Shrine • Encyclopaedia Britannica, shibui — https://www.britannica.com/art/shibui • Smithsonian archives, Elizabeth Gordon papers (House Beautiful's 1960 shibui issues) — https://asia.si.edu/research/archives/search/ead_collection:sova-fsa-a1988-03 • Japan Tourism Agency, Japan Blue and Awa indigo — https://www.mlit.go.jp/tagengo-db/en/R2-01794.html • EPA, lead-safe renovations for do-it-yourselfers — https://www.epa.gov/lead/lead-safe-renovations-diyers • General Finishes, choosing a topcoat (oil-based finishes amber) — https://generalfinishes.com/faq/which-topcoat-should-i-choose • NAR, 2025 Profile of Home Staging — https://www.nar.realtor/research-and-statistics/research-reports/profile-of-home-staging • Angi, room painting cost — https://www.angi.com/articles/how-much-does-it-cost-paint-room.htm • Angi, cabinet refinishing cost — https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-refinish-cabinets.htm • HomeAdvisor, cabinet installation cost — https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/cabinets-and-countertops/install-cabinets/ • Angi, carpet removal cost — https://www.angi.com/articles/how-much-does-carpet-removal-cost.htm • Angi, hardwood refinishing cost — https://www.angi.com/articles/hardwood-floor-refinishing-cost-and-other-factors.htm • Angi, interior door cost — https://www.angi.com/articles/how-much-does-it-cost-install-interior-door.htm • Angi, closet door cost — https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-install-closet-door.htm • Angi, reupholstery cost — https://www.angi.com/articles/cost-to-reupholster-couch.htm • Angi, concrete walkway cost — https://www.angi.com/articles/how-much-does-concrete-walkway-cost.htm • Angi, kitchen remodel cost — https://www.angi.com/articles/how-much-should-kitchen-remodel-cost.htm #japanesehome #homeupdate #homedecor #japandi #diyhome #homeownertips
